In 2000, a Walnut neighbor named Annette recorded 18 stories in an Oral History Booklet for the Walnut Neighborhood.
Our neighborhood, located near Downtown Waterloo, IA, has a rich and important history, and the stories captured in that booklet are so precious…especially since many homeowners that were interviewed 24 years ago are no longer living.
Over the past 7 years, the Walnut Neighborhood has seen 25 new homes built. We have many new neighbors, and we thought it might be time to create a new oral history booklet with a mix of longtime residents, new residents, and also stories from some of our neighborhood businesses and nonprofits. Who is the lucky one that gets to conduct the interviews? It’s me, it’s me! I am 8 interviews in, and what an honor it is to hear my neighbors’ stories!
How well do you know your neighbors? Consider creating an oral history booklet for your neighborhood. It is a great way to connect with neighbors and a great way to create a sense of community in your neighborhood!
